How the Directional Traffic Counter Works

Count each person or vehicle by the way it travels. Give each direction its own tally. Then compare the two flows for the same period.

  1. Name the directions: Label buttons by compass direction or destination, such as Inbound and Outbound.
  2. Tap by direction: Tap the button for the direction each vehicle, bike or person travels.
  3. Add turning movements: Add Left, Through and Right buttons for junction counts.
  4. Read the split: See volumes and the percent share of each direction.

Directional Traffic Counter Formula

Add the two direction counts to get total flow. Subtract one from the other to find the net flow.

Directional split (%) = Peak direction ÷ (Direction A + Direction B) × 100
Direction A, B
Counts in each direction
Peak direction
The larger of the 2 counts

Example: A morning count records 660 inbound and 340 outbound vehicles. Split = 660 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 66% inbound, written as 66/34.

About the Directional Traffic Counter

This tally keeps the two directions of a flow apart. You might count eastbound and westbound cars, or entries and exits.

Use a clear line or point for each count. Record each crossing once. Keep both sides on the same time window so their totals can be compared.

Ways to Use the Directional Traffic Counter

Use direction counts for roads, doors and paths. Here are five tasks that use the same idea.

  • Commuter studies: Count inbound and outbound flow at morning and evening peaks.
  • Junction turning counts: Count left, through and right movements on each approach.
  • Cycle lane planning: Count cyclists in each direction on a street.
  • Event traffic: Count arrivals and departures at a stadium.
  • One-way trials: Compare flow before and after a one-way system.
