How the Double-Tap Counter Works
The Double-Tap Counter adds 1 each time 2 taps land within 300 ms and 30 px of each other. Taps that fall outside the time or distance window count as 2 single taps.
- Tap twice quickly: Tap the same spot 2 times in a row.
- Pass the time check: The gap between the 1st tap's release and the 2nd tap's start must be under 300 ms.
- Pass the distance check: The 2nd tap must land within 30 px (7.9 mm) of the 1st tap.
- Read the count: The display shows double taps and the success rate of all attempts.
Double-Tap Counter Formula
The Double-Tap Counter adds 1 when the gap between 2 taps is under the time limit and the distance between them is under the distance limit.
- t₁, t₂
- Release time of tap 1 and start time of tap 2
- x, y
- Positions of the 2 taps
Example: Tap 1 lifts at 1,000 ms at (100, 200). Tap 2 starts at 1,180 ms at (110, 205). Gap = 180 ms, distance = 11.2 px. Both pass, so the count rises by 1.

About the Double-Tap Counter
A Double-Tap Counter is a gesture counter that tallies pairs of quick taps on the same spot. The double tap triggers zoom, like and select actions in many apps.
Double-tap speed differs between people. Older adults and people with motor impairments often need 400 to 500 ms between taps, which is why iOS and Android let users lengthen the double-tap timing.
Ways to Use the Double-Tap Counter
The Double-Tap Counter has 5 key uses, including gesture timing tests and accessibility tuning.
- Gesture timing tests: Developers check double-tap recognition rates.
- Accessibility tuning: Users find a comfortable double-tap gap before changing system settings.
- Game input practice: Players practice double-tap dodges and dashes.
- Screen response checks: Testers confirm the screen catches both taps in fast pairs.
- Counting double events: Users mark paired events, such as heartbeats, with one double tap each.
