How the Linked Touch Counters Works
Linked Touch Counters update 2 or more related tallies with a single tap, using rules that connect one counter to another. A tap on a child counter adds to its parent total, and a transfer rule moves counts between linked counters.
- Create the counters: Set up counters such as In, Out and Inside.
- Define the links: Link In to add 1 to Inside, and link Out to subtract 1 from Inside.
- Tap one counter: Each tap updates the tapped counter and every counter linked to it.
- Check all totals: Read every linked total together. The numbers stay consistent with each other.
Linked Touch Counters Formula
The Linked Touch Counters linked total equals the sum of each source counter multiplied by its link weight.
- Source(i)
- Count on linked counter i
- Weight(i)
- Link rule: +1 adds, −1 subtracts, 0 ignores
Example: In = 85 with weight +1 and Out = 62 with weight −1. Inside = (85 × 1) + (62 × −1) = 23.
Linked Touch Counters Reference Table

About the Linked Touch Counters
Linked Touch Counters are a set of tallies connected by rules, so a change in one counter updates the others. The links keep related numbers in sync without extra taps.
A common link is the occupancy trio: In, Out and Inside. A second pattern is the rollup, where Boxes counts with a weight of 12 into a Units total. Linked counters cut the number of taps per event from 2 or 3 down to 1.
Ways to Use the Linked Touch Counters
Linked Touch Counters have 5 main uses, including occupancy tracking and unit rollups.
- Occupancy tracking: In and Out counters feed an Inside total.
- Unit rollups: A Cartons counter with a weight of 24 feeds a Units total.
- Team scores: Each player's points feed the team total.
- Budget tallies: Income and expense counters feed a balance.
- Survey totals: Each answer counter feeds a Responses total.
