How the Multi-Zone Touch Counter Works

The Multi-Zone Touch Counter splits the screen into separate regions and keeps a separate total for each region. The tool reads the X and Y position of every tap and adds 1 to the zone that contains that point.

  1. Choose a zone layout: Pick 2, 4, 6 or 9 zones. A 2 × 2 grid gives 4 equal quarters of the screen.
  2. Label each zone: Name zones by what they count, such as Adults, Children, Bikes and Cars.
  3. Tap the right zone: Tap inside a zone to raise that zone's total by 1. The other zones stay the same.
  4. Read the grand total: The tool adds all zone totals into one overall figure.

Multi-Zone Touch Counter Formula

The Multi-Zone Touch Counter zone index equals the row number multiplied by the column count, plus the column number. Each tap adds 1 to that zone.

Zone = floor(y ÷ H × R) × C + floor(x ÷ W × C)
x, y
Tap position in pixels
W, H
Counter width and height in pixels
R, C
Number of rows and columns
floor( )
Rounds down to a whole number

Example: A 400 × 400 px surface uses a 2 × 2 grid. A tap at (300, 100) gives floor(100 ÷ 400 × 2) × 2 + floor(300 ÷ 400 × 2) = 0 × 2 + 1 = Zone 1, the top-right quarter.

Multi-Zone Touch Counter Reference Table

The Multi-Zone Touch Counter conversion table shows zone size on a 390 × 844 px phone screen for each grid layout.

3 × 39130 × 28134 × 74

About the Multi-Zone Touch Counter

A Multi-Zone Touch Counter is a screen divided into tap regions, with each region acting as its own tally counter. One device replaces several hand clickers.

Zone counting suits jobs where items fall into fixed groups. A traffic survey records cars, trucks, buses and bikes in 4 zones, and the counter keeps all 4 numbers plus a combined total.

Ways to Use the Multi-Zone Touch Counter

The Multi-Zone Touch Counter has 5 common uses, including traffic class counts and court-zone sports stats.

  • Traffic class counts: Surveyors log cars, trucks, buses and bikes in separate zones.
  • Court-zone sports stats: Coaches map shots by court area, such as left wing, center and right wing.
  • Screen sensitivity tests: Technicians tap each zone 50 times to find dead areas on a panel.
  • Survey answers: Interviewers tap Yes, No and Unsure zones while asking questions face to face.
  • Lab sorting: Lab staff count samples by type, such as pass, fail and retest.
