How the Music Practice Counter Works

The Music Practice Counter tallies correct run-throughs of a passage and tracks the tempo for each run, so progress shows as more clean repetitions at higher speeds.

  1. Name the passage: Enter the piece and bars, such as Etude bars 12–20.
  2. Set the tempo: Enter the metronome speed in beats per minute (BPM).
  3. Tap Clean or Miss: Tap Clean after a run without errors and Miss after a run with errors.
  4. Raise the tempo: After a target of clean runs, such as 5 in a row, raise the BPM by 4 to 8.

Music Practice Counter Formula

The Music Practice Counter accuracy equals clean runs divided by total runs, multiplied by 100. Tempo progress equals current BPM divided by goal BPM.

Accuracy (%) = Clean ÷ (Clean + Miss) × 100 | Tempo progress (%) = Current BPM ÷ Goal BPM × 100
Clean

Miss

Example: A violinist plays 20 runs at 96 BPM, with 16 clean. Accuracy = 80%. With a goal of 132 BPM, tempo progress = 72.7%.

About the Music Practice Counter

A Music Practice Counter is a practice log that counts clean and missed repetitions of a musical passage.

Music teachers often use the rule of 5 clean repetitions in a row before raising the metronome. Counting clean runs, not total runs, rewards accuracy over speed.

Ways to Use the Music Practice Counter

The Music Practice Counter has 5 main uses, including tempo building and exam preparation.

  • Tempo building: Musicians raise the BPM after a set of clean runs.
  • Exam preparation: Students log repetitions of exam pieces and scales.
  • Scale practice: Players count clean scales in each key.
  • Teacher reports: Teachers check practice logs at lessons.
  • Band rehearsals: Directors count run-throughs of a hard section.
