How the Positive and Negative Counter Works

The Positive and Negative Counter records gains on one side and losses on the other, then shows the balance as gains minus losses. Unlike a plain up/down counter, both sides keep their own totals, so you see the full history behind the balance.

  1. Tap the green side for gains: Each tap on the positive control adds 1 to the gains total.
  2. Tap the red side for losses: Each tap on the negative control adds 1 to the losses total.
  3. Read the balance: The center number shows gains minus losses and can go below 0.
  4. Compare the ratio: The tool shows the share of positive events out of all events.

Positive and Negative Counter Formula

The Positive and Negative Counter balance equals total gains minus total losses. The positive share equals gains divided by gains plus losses.

Balance = Gains − Losses | Positive share = Gains ÷ (Gains + Losses) × 100

Example: A trader logs 27 winning trades and 18 losing trades. Balance = 27 − 18 = +9. Positive share = 27 ÷ 45 × 100 = 60%.

About the Positive and Negative Counter

A Positive and Negative Counter is a two-column tally that tracks good and bad events separately and reports the net result. The balance can be positive, zero or negative.

Keeping gains and losses apart preserves information that a single net number hides. A balance of +5 from 5 gains and 0 losses differs from +5 from 105 gains and 100 losses.

Ways to Use the Positive and Negative Counter

There are 5 main uses of the Positive and Negative Counter, including trade logs and behavior charts.

  • Trade logs: Traders count winning and losing trades to find the win rate.
  • Behavior charts: Parents and teachers count positive and negative behaviors.
  • Plus-minus stats: Hockey and basketball coaches track goals for and against while a player is on court.
  • Quality feedback: Support teams count thumbs-up and thumbs-down ratings.
  • Habit balance: Users count healthy and unhealthy choices across a day.
