How the Weighted Touch Counter Works

The Weighted Touch Counter assigns a different value to each type of touch, so one tap on a heavy item adds more than one tap on a light item. Each button carries a weight, and the total sums weight times taps.

  1. Create weighted buttons: Add buttons such as Small = 1, Medium = 2 and Large = 5.
  2. Tap the matching button: Each tap adds that button's weight to the weighted total.
  3. See raw and weighted totals: The display shows the number of taps and the weighted score.
  4. Adjust weights: Change a weight to recalculate the total from the stored tap counts.

Weighted Touch Counter Formula

The Weighted Touch Counter total equals the sum of each button's tap count multiplied by its weight.

Weighted total = Σ (Taps(k) × Weight(k))
Taps(k)
Number of taps on button k
Weight(k)
Value of button k

Example: Small (weight 1) gets 20 taps, Medium (weight 2) gets 12 taps and Large (weight 5) gets 4 taps. Weighted total = 20 + 24 + 20 = 64.

About the Weighted Touch Counter

A Weighted Touch Counter is a tally that multiplies each tap by a value set for its category. The weighted total reflects size, importance or points, not just the number of events.

Traffic engineers use passenger car units (PCU) to weight trucks and buses against cars. Sports scorers weight baskets by 1, 2 or 3 points. The Weighted Touch Counter applies the same idea to any count.

Ways to Use the Weighted Touch Counter

The Weighted Touch Counter has 5 main uses, including basketball scoring and traffic PCU counts.

  • Basketball scoring: Separate buttons add 1, 2 or 3 points.
  • Traffic PCU counts: Cars count as 1 PCU, and buses count as 3 PCU.
  • Workload points: Teams weight simple tasks at 1 and complex tasks at 5.
  • Shipping estimates: Parcels count by size class to estimate van space.
  • Quiz scoring: Easy answers score 1, and hard answers score 3.
