How the Counter Data Importer Works

Load a saved count file to bring its data back into a tool. Check the file type, field names and dates before you use the data.

  1. Choose the file: Select a CSV or JSON file exported earlier.
  2. Map the columns: Match file columns to counter fields, such as name, total and timestamp.
  3. Validate: The tool flags missing values, bad dates and duplicate rows.
  4. Import: Pick Replace to overwrite current data, or Merge to add to it.

Counter Data Importer Formula

The loaded total is the sum of the valid rows. Check for repeat rows and decide whether to add to or replace the current data.

Merged total = Current + Imported − Duplicates
Current
Total before import
Imported
Total in the file
Duplicates
Events with the same ID or timestamp already present

Example: A counter holds 350. The file holds 500, of which 120 events are already present. Merged total = 350 + 500 − 120 = 730.

About the Counter Data Importer

An import reads counts from a file so you can work with them again. It is the reverse of an export.

Keep a copy of the source file. Check a few rows by hand after loading it. A date or number in the wrong format can change how a row is read.

Ways to Use the Counter Data Importer

Load saved data to restore a count, join records or move work to a new device. Here are five uses.

  • Device moves: Move counters from an old phone to a new one.
  • Backup restores: Restore counts after clearing browser data.
  • Merging teams: Combine exports from several counters.
  • Template setup: Load a prepared list of categories before an event.
  • Data corrections: Fix a CSV in a spreadsheet and import it again.
