How the Touch Rhythm Analyzer Works

The Touch Rhythm Analyzer compares the intervals between your taps and scores how steady your rhythm is as a consistency percentage. A score near 100% means every gap is almost the same length.

  1. Tap a steady beat: Tap at least 8 times at an even pace. More taps give a more reliable score.
  2. Collect intervals: The tool records every inter-tap interval in milliseconds.
  3. Calculate spread: The analyzer finds the average interval and the standard deviation of all intervals.
  4. Read the score: The consistency score, average tempo and the most uneven taps appear on screen.

Touch Rhythm Analyzer Formula

The Touch Rhythm Analyzer consistency score equals 100% minus the coefficient of variation of the tap intervals. The coefficient of variation (CV) equals the standard deviation divided by the mean.

CV = σ ÷ μ | Consistency = (1 − CV) × 100%
μ
Mean interval in milliseconds
σ
Standard deviation of intervals
CV
Relative spread of intervals

Example: Intervals average μ = 500 ms with σ = 25 ms. CV = 25 ÷ 500 = 0.05. Consistency = (1 − 0.05) × 100 = 95%.

About the Touch Rhythm Analyzer

A Touch Rhythm Analyzer is a timing tool that measures how evenly spaced a series of taps is. The tool focuses on regularity, not speed.

Rhythm research shows that trained drummers keep tap timing within 2% to 4% of the mean interval. Untrained adults usually land between 5% and 10%. Timing spread rises at very slow tempos, below 40 beats per minute (BPM).

Ways to Use the Touch Rhythm Analyzer

There are 5 main uses of the Touch Rhythm Analyzer, including drum practice and motor timing research.

  • Drum practice: Drummers check steady timing without a metronome.
  • Motor timing research: Researchers measure timing spread in tapping studies.
  • Rehabilitation tracking: Therapists track rhythm steadiness after hand or brain injury.
  • Rhythm game training: Players reduce timing spread before playing hard songs.
  • Dance counts: Dancers tap counts to check even phrasing.
